Abstract
Objective: to explore the perceptions and experiences of men who participated as companions in obstetric psychoprophylaxis (OPP) classes, analyzing how these spaces influence the construction of co-responsible fatherhood and the questioning of gender norms.
Method: a qualitative study was conducted within the framework of the Student Research Support Program (PAIE, Universidad de la República), involving 20 men who attended obstetric psychoprophylaxis classes together with their partners. Semi-structured interviews were carried out and analyzed through thematic analysis.
Results: findings showed that male participation was mostly encouraged by their partners’ invitation or expectations, placing men in a secondary role. Institutional, symbolic, and work-related barriers were identified both in obstetric psychoprophylaxis and during childbirth itself, alongside experiences that promoted reflections on care and male involvement. The role of health professionals proved to be key both in encouraging participation and in the development of the educational instances.
Conclusions: the findings highlight the need to conceive obstetric psychoprophylaxis not only as a right for pregnant women, but also as an opportunity to promote co-responsibility and challenge gender stereotypes. Institutional policies and practices are needed to actively engage men and foster informed participation in reproductive and caregiving processes.
